Should There Be Extra Costs Or A COVID-19 Surcharge?

Many businesses are reopening, and, across the country (not necessarily locally) some are adding COVID-19 surcharges to customers' bills. Why? Well, it makes sense to me, after hearing what some of the business owners have to say. Think about the extra costs businesses have to pay in order to keep customers safe and comply with safety mandates. Extra cleaning supplies, masks, filters and so on, just add to the hardship that most businesses are already feeling after struggling through the past couple of months. The article is here. And, while I'm not a fan of high prices, I think those that can deal with a little bump in prices to help keep favorite shops open, should not complain in the interim. I love some BBQ, If a jumbo sammich from Mike's BBQ House costs $1 more over the summer, I'm happy to pay it to help Mike stay in business, so I can still get a jumbo sammich in November. One point of clarity: It brings up my blood pressure when any business uses a crisis to increase prices, then, never drop them back when the crisis is obviously over. With the effect this pandemic has had on local businesses, suppliers, processing and more, "over" is probably a long way from being a reality.
