During Tuesday’s Bobby Bones Show podcast, Amy’s son Stevenson was hanging out in the studio. With power outages still affecting their home, the studio had heat, so Stevenson spent some time there and even joined the conversation briefly.
A caller named Jarrah from Tallahassee, Florida called in with a direct question for Amy after her son's guest appearance. She pointed out that when Bobby mentioned Stevenson was 15, Amy seemed hesitant and deflected when the topic of driving came up. Jarrah asked why Stevenson didn’t have his permit yet and suggested Amy might be nervous about his driving, especially given the show’s long-running jokes about Amy’s own driving. Amy pushed back, saying she is a good driver and even referenced a past driving test where the instructor praised her. The show, however, teased that her issues behind the wheel tend to involve distraction and non-moving objects rather than speed or recklessness.
Amy then explained the real reason for delaying Stevenson’s permit. She shared that based on advice from professionals and those close to their family, they’ve chosen to slow certain milestones for him. Stevenson is 15, but is behind academically and emotionally compared to his peers. Amy explained that due to his early life circumstances, including living in an orphanage until age seven, his maturity level is different, and delaying driving is part of supporting him where he currently is. She added that although Stevenson knows other kids his age are starting to drive, he and his sister have developed at different paces, and the family is making decisions based on what’s best for him right now. After acknowledging and appreciating the explanation, Jarrah followed up with a lighter but equally pointed question: Amy’s car. Specifically, the service engine light that frequently appears in her Instagram stories. Amy explained she had an appointment scheduled to address it, but it was canceled due to the ice storm. She admitted the issue isn’t serious and is related to routine maintenance like an oil change. Still, the studio joked that the light has been on so long she no longer notices it, even though listeners definitely do. Amy admitted she sometimes tries to change her phone screen before posting to avoid showing the warning light, but fans still catch it.
